Recognized worldwide San Francisco designer Masha Archer was born in Kiev, Ukraine to Sophia and Mykola Muchin, both artists and teachers of painting and sculpture.
After they immigrated to the United States, Masha later went on to study painting and graphic design at Pratt Institute in New York City.
While working as a restorer and exhibitor at the Museo Nacional de Mexico in Mexico City, Masha met her future husband, Charles Archer, artist, photographer and student at the now famous Black Mountain College. Together they moved to Tucson, where Masha began her career designing jewelry and clothing, and then on to San Francisco, where she and Charles collaborated for many years. The interaction of her jewelry and the body became the subject of Charles Archer’s most inspired work.
Greatly influenced by her artist parent’s travels through many countries, Masha’s heritage trained her to recognize art as line, form, texture, design and beauty with elements common in all cultures. Masha believes that although art and design may differ greatly among geographic areas and generations, we bring to our art or own culture and experience and, if treated with honor and respect, we are able to produce something with intrinsic beauty. Masha’s work reflects her philosophy that almost all forms of art, dance, music, and design are a fusion of different life experiences and cultural influences. It is historically clear that Masha is largely responsible for creating the "signature tribal look". Named "Art-to-Wear Jewelry Designer, USA" by the New York Fashion Group in 1995, Masha Archer has been changing the way we see jewelry, fashion and design for nearly four decades.
